In recent years the ATO has targeted performers for auditing. Unfortunately this has meant some performers having to back pay money and fines to the ATO. You can avoid being in this position by ensuring that you only make genuine deductions and that you understand what you are claiming.

Ask your accountant to explain if you are unsure about anything in your tax return. Ultimately it is not a defence to say that your accountant made the false claim and you didn’t understand so it pays to spend some time reviewing the claims that your accountant may be making on your behalf.
