This is MEAA’s submission to the Federal Government’s Economic Reform Roundtable.

In it, MEAA raises concerns about OpenAI’s claim that the uptake of Artificial Intelligence can boost the Australian economy by up to $115 billion. These claims overlook the significant negative repercussions of AI on the labour market, including on creative and media workers.

In order to ameliorate the negative impacts on workers, MEAA argues that the government must introduce an AI Act and an AI regulator, mandate the compensation of content used to train AI, protect performers from unauthorised digital replicas, establish an enforceable system of Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP), and enact privacy reform to protect personal data from being used for the purposes training without genuine and informed consent.
