“The Women in Media mentoring program opens doors. It forces you to address what you really want and go for it …… now, I’m in New York, studying a cutting-edge course in one of the most dynamic environments in the world.”  Emma Cillekens – former ABC Radio Breakfast Presenter – Mount Isa.

Emma signed up for Women in Media Queensland’s first mentoring intake in 2014-15.  She loved working in outback Queensland but had dreams of working in bigger radio markets and studying and working overseas.

Eighteen months later, she’s now living, studying and working in New York at the prestigious New York University (NYU) after stints presenting the ABC Regional Drive program to half of Queensland and also Drive at ABC Sunshine Coast.

How did she do it?  Her mentor, Jenny Brennen, ABC Local Manager Brisbane, encouraged her to look hard at her long-term goals and think about how she could achieve them.  Through her mentor’s contacts Emma applied for a Masters course on media digital disruption at NYU.  She was not only accepted, she was offered a scholarship as well.  She’s also landed a job in the journalism department at the university.
