Can Journalism Go Global? Should it?
Featuring Professor Stephen J. A. Ward

Global media ethics aim to develop universal values and responsibilities for news media in an increasingly global landscape. Yet journalism culture, practice, and ethics are parochial. The ‘near and dear,’ especially one’s nation, is prior to global aims. So, to what extent is a global media ethic possible? Is it a philosopher’s dream? Do journalists, and the public, really want a media with global values

Stephen J. A. Ward is an internationally recognised media ethicist, journalist, educator, consultant, keynote speaker and award-winning author. He is Distinguished Lecturer in Ethics at the University of British Columbia and, until recently, acting co-chair of the Ethics Advisory Committee of the Canadian Association of Journalists. Ward was a war correspondent, foreign reporter and newsroom manager for 14 years and has received a lifetime award for service to professional journalism in Canada. His current research is on the future of media ethics in a global interactive world.
