Building Bridges: Media and Cultural Industries and University Research - Perth

All Women in Media and WA MEAA members are warmly invited to an event aimed at bridging the gap between research and practice, academia and industry. Yes – we’re coming out of our ‘ivory tower’ and want to meet you and share a festive season drink!

If you have a research idea you might need help with, would like to connect more with researchers in your area or simply would like to meet an actual academic in real life, please join us! The next WA Communication, Culture and Media (WACCM) initiative, which will be a networking and engagement event to discuss research engagement and impact with the media, cultural and related industry, government and community sectors.

How can academic research help support community needs and media, communication and cultural professionals working in industry, government and community?

What is university research for, and how can it be of more direct use to the community and professionals?

What are the needs of professionals and organisations?  What kind of research is helpful and in what ways can we collaborate better to ensure benefits and good outcomes for all?

This WACCM Networking and Engagement event will include:

  • Brief introductions and networking opportunities between media, public relations and related industry, government and community personnel with academic teaching and research staff, postgraduates and others in media, communication and cultural studies, discussion and drinks.
  • Brief talk by Brett McCarthy, Editor, The West Australian on the needs of media organisations
  • Brief talk by Steven Maras, Associate Professor, The University of Western Australia on engagement experiences with screenwriters and journalists
  • Brief talk by Jamie Wilkinson, Director Design & Digital, Cannings Purple on the needs of public relations sector
  • Brief talk by Catherine Archer, Lecturer, Murdoch University on how she worked with a range of organisations on impact-directed, high-engagement research
