In 2016, AFLW burst onto our screens and the back pages of newspapers in what seemed to herald a new era of coverage of women’s sport in Australia. But while AFLW captured the attention of the sports media, total coverage of women’s sport continues to get less time and less newspaper space than men’s sport and horses and dogs!

Will the success of our international women’s teams and individual athletes motivate a new generation of young women to take up sport? Why despite the rising profile of women’s sport, does media coverage continue to lag way behind? Is interest in the AFLW or the Matildas simply a passing novelty? How far have we really come? How far have we got to go before headlines about female athletes and women’s teams are the norm rather than the exception?
