PEN Lecture: Fragile Minds Sydney Writers’ Festival

03/05/2019
4:30pm - 5:30pm
Carriageworks, Bay 22 245 Wilson Street, Eveleigh

Journalism is at its second crossroads in two decades: not one of means, but of privilege. The loss of major revenues has made the press fragile, both economically but also in terms of self-reflection. We struggle to hear criticism. We deify our work. We fluctuate between victimhood and outrage, asking too few questions of ourselves. Join the Editor-in-Chief of The Saturday Paper, Erik Jensen, as he asks how the media can change itself to keep up with a society that has already changed.

This event is a fundraiser for Sydney PEN. A share of each ticket price goes directly to PEN.

Erik Jensen is the editor-in-chief of Schwartz Media, publisher of The Saturday Paper and The Monthly. He is the author of Acute Misfortune: The Life and Death of Adam Cullen and On Kate Jennings. The film of his first book, for which he co-wrote the screenplay, won the Critics’ Prize at the Melbourne International Film Festival. His journalism has won the Walkley Award for Young Print Journalist of the Year and the UNAA’s Media Peace Award. His next work, Quarterly Essay 74, is out in June.
